Introduction

8.8.88 this was an auspicious date in the recent history of K.E.M.U. It was this day when a seed was sown which was to grow up in the coming years at an astonishing speed.

A small store of physicians samples, a few donations, a modicum of finances, this was all we started with. Our resources were not very impressive in the eyes of many in the beginning but what many overlooked was our high spirits, our high morale and our sincere wishes-to be of use to others, to be a source of comfort to the ailing humanity and above all to be a medium through which the well off could help the needy. So with minds full of dreams and ideas, the students of K.E.M.U set out to realize our goal.

A counter was erected in the outdoor of Mayo Hospital. This was followed gradually by the opening of a proper office in the OPD. Now with passage of time we have acquired a substantial store of drugs. Along with it now we have established many welfare sections, operating actively within their sub-sets including medicine section with subsets of anti-diabetic (12000/month), asthma inhalers (24000/month), hepatitis sub-set, hypertension subset, CNS subset, GIT subset, Renal subset (8000/month) and many more; blood donation section donating more than 400 pints/ year; patient care section with various subsets providing some expensive therapies e.g interferons for hepatitis, to some selected patients (60,000/ patient), providing better health care facilities e.g donation of 3 Sonic Aids and 3 nebulizers to 3 units of Lady Wellington Hospital, installation of 80 bracket and exhaust fans in Mayo OPD, providing free PCR to all the patients referred to us by Zakat Office (9000/month), provision of free hearing aids to all the poor patients referred to us by Zakat Office (5000/month), taking complete care of few selected patients by fulfilling all their needs e.g medicines, moral support, financial support, provision of attendants to few unattended patients in wards of Mayo Hospital, organizing free medical camps in the remote areas in the outskirts of Lahore providing free medicines and free check-up facilities are by the capable doctors of the Mayo Hospital; health promotion section organizing various health awareness programs, seminars and workshops etc. In short, we have come a long way in a short time. But we still have a long way ahead of us and we need your help for that. Let us come forward and join hands in our struggle to nourish our seed of service so that SPWS grows up into a strong and fruitful tree!
