It was a petition signing day to motivate the Government of Pakistan to pass the Disability Bill. The bill is intended to make govt. buildings disabled-friendly, installing lifts in all govt. buildings whatsoever and giving equal accessibility rights to all. The day started with a walk all the way from zero point to the auditorium.
As the workshop began, Tanzeela Khan, who came up with the brilliant idea of a ‘ramp movement’, explained the aim of the movement excellently. A documentary was also shown. Dr.Khalid Jameel shared his bittersweet experiences. The most interesting part was when the audience was invited to play their part. The petition was signed; the people divided into groups, made motivating posters and performed various skits.
A skit by 2nd year demonstrated how a young capable person was rejected a job just because he was disabled and could not climb the stairs to his office as there was neither a ramp nor a lift.
Another highlighted how the disabled children are ignored and deprived by their very own families. The messages of other skits were: ‘You don’t need feet to cover great distances’,
‘Disability is not a barrier to love’ and ‘You can accomplish anything if you have a strong helping hand’. The day ended with the much awaited performance by Laal Band.
